From pro sailing to basketball

Established in 2018, SailGP seeks to be an annual, global sports league featuring fan-centric inshore racing among national teams in some of the iconic harbors around the globe. League founders owned the original six teams, and it has been a mandate for the now ten teams to be financially independent after five seasons.

Some are, some aren’t, with the previously independent Team Canada failing to meet funding obligations, with the league taking back ownership. In November 2022, the league sought to advance this requirement with a fan-owned team for Season 4 but the intuitive could not meet financial deadlines.

In a story by Debrypt, they report on how new wind for this SailGP effort may be a step toward something else:

There exists a future, one not so far from now, in which NBA players will be able to join together and collectively own major basketball franchises like the Lakers, the Warriors, and the Miami Heat. And they’ll use cryptocurrency-based tools to do it.

At least that’s what two-time NBA All-Star and tech entrepreneur Baron Davis believes. And it all starts with professional sailing, he says. – Full report

Format for Season 4:
• Teams compete in identical F50 catamarans.
• Each event runs across two days.
• Up to seven qualifying fleet races of approximately 15 minutes may be scheduled for each regatta.
• The top three teams from qualifying advance to a final race to be crowned event champion and earn the largest share of the $300.000.00 USD event prize money purse that’s divided among the top three teams.
• The season ends with the Grand Final, which includes the Championship Final Race for the top three teams in the season standing with the winner claiming the $1m USD prize.
