Storm concerns NYYC Invitational Cup

Published on September 13th, 2023

For a sport reliant on the weather, the biennial Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup is getting more variety than it’d prefer in 2023 for the 19 international teams competing September 12-16 in Newport, RI. The approach of Hurricane Lee has become the focus for this premiere Corinthian big boat regatta.

With up to 12 races planned for this non-discard series in IC37s, there’s an urgency to get in as many as possible. Despite light winds on day one, teams were kept out late to complete three races, but after the first race on day two, a frontal passage and accompanying lightning storm cancelled further racing.

The remaining regatta schedule has been altered due to the approach of Hurricane Lee with earlier start times on September 14 and 15 as there will be no racing on the final day.
