The main mast of a historic excursion vessel splintered and fell onto the deck, killing one person and injuring three others aboard the 118-foot schooner Grace Bailey off the coast of Maine on October 9, 2023.

In mild conditions, the schooner was returning from a four-day cruise with 33 people were on board, and was about 1 mile east of the Rockland harbor at the time of the incident.

The Coast Guard will conduct a full investigation into the incident to determine the cause of the accident. The Grace Bailey is part of the state’s so-called windjammer fleet, a collection of sailing vessels that take people on excursions up and down the coast. – Full report

MORE: The victim has been identified as Dr. Emily Mecklenburg, 40, who was a physician at the hospital where the three other victims were taken for treatment. – Full report
