Mark Bowers, age 70 of Lake Minnetonka, passed away peacefully on November 9, 2023. Born on June 6, 1953 to parents Gordon and Virginia Bowers, he was the youngest of six boys and spent a happy childhood on Lake Minnetonka while growing up in Deephaven, MN.
From a young age, Mark developed a passion for competitive sailing and became a central character in the local sailing community for the rest of his life. Known for his sunny personality and unwavering optimism, he was loved by friends and family far and wide.
He raced scows across six decades, winning two E Scow ILYA Championships and two National Championships among many more podium finishes. Outside of scows, he raced the Flying Dutchman internationally with older brother Gordy and competed in multiple J/24 World Championships.
A devoted husband and father, he was happily married to his wife Suzie for 37 years and dedicated his adult life to raising his two children, Erik and Sara. The family enjoyed many trips and adventures abroad, while their home was always a popular gathering place for friends and family. Mark will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
He passed away in his sleep on November 9 while visiting his daughter Sara in Los Angeles, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents Gordon and Virginia and his brothers Danny and Steve.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers donations which will be distributed to youth sailing initiatives and other causes close to Mark’s heart. Mark’s Celebration of Life will be held 4:00-9:00pm on November 17 with special remarks and sharing at 6:00pm, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church (gathering space on West end of building) 680 Mill Street, Excelsior.
