Most competitive event in youth sailing

Published on December 7th, 2023

All nations in good standing with World Sailing are eligible to submit one entry in the 11 events at the 2023 Youth Sailing World Championship being held December 11-15 in Buzios, Brazil. Competitors shall be above the age of 12 years and under the age of 19 years on December 31, 2023.

But for this year’s event, to help preserve the integrity and safety of the event, that excludes competitors holding only Russian or Belarussian nationality due the involvement of those countries in the Ukrainian war.

“The Youth World Championships is my favorite event in our sport,” said Phil Muller, US Sailing Youth Performance Manager. “It’s the most competitive in youth sailing as it draws the top talent from each participating nation.”

The classes have changed over the years to either mirror current boats found in the Olympics, or that are identified as high-performance training versions that will prepare youth for Olympic classes down the road.

“Thinking beyond performance, this event is unique in how well it establishes our athlete’s national pride as well as bonds of international camaraderie,” added Muller. “These relationships last a lifetime. As a coaching staff, we are thrilled to support our young talent as they put their best effort forth this week.”
