America’s Cup: Testing digital copies

Team New Zealand have begun building and testing 3D digital versions of its America’s Cup rivals’ boats, and not surprisingly says there are no alarm bells ringing.

The work of recreating three dimensional hull shapes and foils of the four challenger boats – Swiss, USA, Great Britain, and Italy – launched so far has provided some head-scratching as the defender tries to weigh up some quite different designs.

“When we do that, they all come out slower than ours,” said Dan Bernasconi (above), Chief Technical Officer for the defender.

Bernasconi was quick to qualify that by saying that it doesn’t mean Team New Zealand has the fastest boat, as its computer modelling may favor its own design, being the one which the modelling produced.

“Our tools reassuringly don’t favor any of the other hull shapes or foil shapes, but some are very close and there’s ones which we’d say were in a few seconds per race, different from ours,” said Bernasconi. – Full report
