25 years of Classic Yachts and Characters

The 25th anniversary of the Corinthian Classic Yacht Regatta arrives in 2024 on August 10-11 in Marblehead, MA. It’s been nothing but Classic Yachts and Classic Characters over the years and there’s plenty to celebrate. It’s been a blast, and this year will be no different.

“Born” in 1999, the event was tabbed “Foxy’s Wooden Boat Regatta North”. The legendary Foxy Callwood was brought up Marblehead way to entertain and meet up with a lot of friends made over the years at Jost Van Dyke. As one can imagine (because memory may be a bit foggy of that regatta) it was a party for the ages.

The tradition has been kept alive with the “Corinthian Classic Yacht Regatta” since that raucous inaugural. Things have toned down a bit, but the great racing, good times and camaraderie haven’t waned a bit.

The regatta has had great support over these 25 years from the Corinthian Yacht Club, and for a few years from Officine Panerai with their “Panerai Classic Yacht Challenge” events. The Overall winner at each event went home with one of their prized timepieces. Talk about taking home the “Silver”! The Classic Yacht Owners Association (CYOA) ultimately created a “Series” and the Corinthian Classic is part of that.

The sailing at the event, done in pursuit start format, is a corinthian thing. Some of these classic yachts (and characters) are pieces of maritime history. No need to “rip it up” at the start of the Corinthian Classic Yacht Regatta. “Sail yer boat fast and not into somebody” is the mantra.
