Paris 2024: New format for Windsurfing

Published on August 1st, 2024

When the International Olympic Committee wanted Sailing to liven up its Program for Paris 2024, the Windsurfing equipment switched from the RS:X to the iQFOiL, and the event also revised its competition schedule.

The changes begin with the course type which include three race formats – the Marathon Race, Slalom, and Course Racing. The Race Committee selects the format depending on wind conditions, and because the Marathon is a longer 60-minute race, it is scored as two races.

At the end of the Opening Series, the standard had been for the top ten athletes advance to a single, double-point Medal Race to conclude the cumulative series, but now for only the Windsurfing event, the top ten qualify for a Medal Series.

Those ranked fourth to tenth compete in a Quarter-Final, with the top two reaching the Semi-Final. They will then face the athletes that finished second and third in the Opening Series. Two will progress from the Semi-Final, joining the top overall athlete in the Final.

The three athletes in the Final are all guaranteed a medal, with the finishing order in the Final race determining who wins what medal.
