‘Quiet Revolution’ about to get noisy

Over the last fifty years, weather prediction has seen a quiet revolution. Driven by stronger computers and more advanced calculations, the range of accurate forecasts has grown from three days out to seven and now to ten and even fifteen.
But traditional forecasts take hours to calculate on the biggest supercomputers, the detail is general and forecasts don’t learn from local conditions. It has become hard to take them further.
In the last five years, Machine Learning has tried to help. It is now improving the accuracy of traditional forecasting but may quickly encounter limits. – Full report
