20 years trying to win the America’s Cup

Published on February 5th, 2025

The label ‘America’s Cup sailor’ refers to someone that has competed in the America’s Cup, and not for any challenger seeking to earn that right. While David ‘Freddie’ Carr stretches the reference in his effort to win the trophy, he finally did earn the label for Great Britain in 2024. Report by Helen Fretter for Yachting World:

“For 23 years I have had the privilege to call myself an America’s Cup sailor, but today is the last day of that for me. The body says it’s time to stop. I am done,” wrote David Carr – or Freddie, as everyone knows him – on 19 October this year.

The day INEOS Britannia bowed out of the 37th America’s Cup as Emirates Team New Zealand took victory marked the end of the third consecutive British campaign, and almost 10 years of trying (the British team did vow to continue on, though a recent high profile split has called into question the future of the British challenge).

Though for Freddie, and many others in Barcelona last summer, it has been a much longer process even that that. – Full report

Defender New Zealand will work with the Challenger of Record from Great Britain to organize the 38th America’s Cup. Anticipated to be held in 2027, the two teams have agreed on some details with the venue to be confirmed by June 2025 after Barcelona declined hosting another edition.
