44Cup opener in British Virgin Islands

Published on February 16th, 2025

The RC44 Class started their new 44Cup season on February 13-16 in Nanny Cay, BVI. After cancelling the first day due to excessive wind, the breeze gradually moderated throughout the event for a final day with brilliant sunshine and a 15-18 knot easterly to take the edge off the Caribbean heat. Nico Poons’ Charisma (MON) with tactician Andy Horton entered the final day tied with Hugues Lepic’s Aleph Racing (FRA) but claimed victory in the nine race event.

About the RC44 boat
Five-time America’s Cup winner Russell Coutts conceived the design of the light-displacement, high-performance one-design RC44 with naval architect Andrej Justin in 2005.

Created for top level one design racing in international regattas under strictly controlled Class Rules, the concept and design features of the RC44 are aimed at the amateur helmsmen with professional crews. For its thirteenth season in 2019, the RC44 Championship Tour was rebranded the 44Cup. https: www.44cup.org/
