College keelboat circuit comes west

Published on March 5th, 2025

Ten college teams will compete in the 2025 Port of Los Angeles Harbor Cup on March 7-9 in San Pedro, CA. The 17th edition plans for a 10-race regatta held off Pt. Fermin in Catalina 37s.

Defending champion Maine Maritime will be joined by 8-time winner Cal Maritime, College of Charleston, Arizona State, Cal Poly, Hawai’i, U.S. Naval Academy, University of Victoria, U.S. Coast Guard, and USC.

U.S. Merchant Marine Academy was one of the original 10 competitors when the 2025 field was announced earlier this academic year but withdrew due to circumstances out of its control. Replacing it as the event’s first alternate was Hawai’i.

Another school forced to withdraw was UC Santa Barbara, which opened a coveted spot for University of Victoria — one of two schools making their inaugural appearance in one of offshore sailing’s premier events.

Arizona State is the other program making its Harbor Cup debut this year.

Since its inaugural race in 2008, 165 teams and over 1,400 student-athletes competed in the 16-event history of the Harbor Cup; competition did not take place in 2021 due to COVID-19.

With eight championships to its credit, no school hoisted the Port of Los Angeles Harbor Cup Perpetual Trophy more than Cal Maritime, one of two universities (Navy is the other) that competed in every regatta in the competition’s history.
