Will Auckland fund America’s Cup venue?

The venue for the next America’s Cup may not be known until June 2025, but Team New Zealand chief executive Grant Dalton wants to do everything possible to host the next America’s Cup in New Zealand.
Dalton said there are two strong international bidders interested in hosting the 2027 races, but the Auckland council’s event arm confirmed it had entered talks with the Kiwi cup holders.
Auckland University of Technology professor of sport and recreation Mark Orams, also a former member of Team New Zealand, says Auckland would need to stump up NZ$200 million (114.5m USD) to secure hosting rights for the next America’s Cup.
An economic impact study revealed over €1 billion (1.079b USD) positive economic GDP return that the 2024 America’s Cup created for the host venue Barcelona, Catalonia.

Defender New Zealand will work with the Challenger of Record from Great Britain to organize the 38th America’s Cup. Anticipated to be held in 2027, the two teams have agreed on some details with the venue to be confirmed by June 2025 after Barcelona declined hosting another edition.
