Tragedy on the ice

A 90-year-old ice windsurfer died March 12 after falling through the ice on Lake Chemung, located 44 miles northwest of Detroit, MI. Witnesses contacted local rescuers that were able to reach the man and keep him above water, but needed a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter and rescue swimmer to remove him from the water. However, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The country sheriff is urging people to stay off the ice as warmer temperatures had created unsafe conditions. – Full report
