• Recap of the Para and Hansa World Championships in Australia
• News from across the world of sailing
The April episode of the World Sailing Show begins in Mallorca for the 54th Trofeo Princesa Sofía, the first major regatta post-Paris 2024 featuring all classes, where a fleet of almost 800 boats from 54 countries would be looking to get back in the groove after the Games.
Ideal conditions and a star-studded fleet saw several Olympic champions continue their good form with new challengers emerging. It was an outstanding week for the British sailors who claimed five golds from ten classes. The World Sailing Show recaps all of the action from a week of high-quality racing and hears from the sailors as they kickstart the 2025 season.
The SailGP fleet makes the short journey from Los Angeles to San Francisco for the next leg of the season. While the teams tested the waters, Team Denmark missed out after breaking their foil the week before. Several teams toiled in the conditions, both in practice and during racing on both days – with Team Australia catching the worst of it and being forced to withdraw from the final after a wing collapse.
The new season of the GKA Kite Surf World Cup got underway in Cape Verde with 25 men and 18 women taking on the famous waves. Reigning women’s champion Capucine Delannoy outscored last year’s winner Moona Whyte to win the event. In the men’s final, Brazil’s Pedro Matos posted a huge score in the final two minutes of the round to claim victory.
The Wingfoil women’s competition was won by 18-year-old Spanish sensation Nia Suardiaz – meaning the teenager has the full set of titles in all four wingfoil disciplines. The men’s final was a North American affair with Canada’s Finn Spencer putting up a big score but narrowly missing out to last year’s champion Cash Berzolla of the USA.
The second stop on the tour at Lords of Tram in Barcarès, France, where the Tramontana winds that sweep down off the snow-capped Pyrenees power the riders to huge scores. Brazil’s Mikaili Sol was unstoppable in the women’s event, as she became GKA Big Air Tour World Champion for the third time after taking all of last year off. The Men’s competition was won by Andrea Principi – another three-time winner.
Next, the World Sailing Show heads down under to the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club near Sydney for the 2025 Hansa and Para World Championships. Over 180 competitors over four classes and seven divisions came from all over the world to compete as equals, and the Pittwater Estuary did not disappoint – proving that sailing is a sport for all.
