Why sailboat racing is dying in America

The reality of all competition, regardless of the sport, is you do better when you try harder. But sailing is unlike other sports, as the trophy winners may not be the most skilled. They may just be the most invested.
Time and money are significant variables for success, and if the cost to participate exceeds the pleasurable benefit, people seek alternative activities. If left unbridled, the effort of trophy winners can ultimately ruin participation.
A video titled, Why Sailboat Racing is Dying in America, talks about the issues and concludes with the following:
Sailboat racing is dying, but it doesn’t have to. If you’re a club officer, simplify things. Make racing fun and easy again. If you own a boat, invite someone new on board. Let them drive or do something other than just be rail meat. Because at the end of the day, this isn’t about flags. It’s about stories. It’s about watching the sunset as you cross the line. It’s about being on the water and people you like. Let’s bring that back.
