You can run but you can’t hide

Scuttlebutt has been reporting on orca attacks along the Spanish and Portuguese coasts since 2020, with the only advice to mariners is to stay offshore when transiting the region. Apparently this boat was still too close to Portugal:

An orca attack on a sailboat off Peniche forced the rescue of five crew members, including three children, according to the Portuguese Navy. The crew were rescued late Friday afternoon (Oct. 10) in an operation coordinated by the Lisbon Maritime Search and Rescue Center.

The 36-foot sailboat, which was about 49nm southwest of Peniche, issued an alert reporting an orca attack, which led to water entering the ship and the sinking of the sailboat. The first vessel to arrive at the scene was a fishing boat closest to the sailboat, which assisted in the rescue of the five crew members.
