Quiz 60
The race committee decides to shorten the course at the gate before the last upwind leg. It anchors the committee boat to the right of the gate (looking upwind) and displays flag S with two sounds before the first boat (Boat X) reaches the gate. How should Boat X finish? Answer below.
Quiz 60 Answer:
The finishing line is between the two gate marks, so Boat X should sail between the two gate marks to finish. Rule 32.2, Shortening or Abandoning After the Start, states: “To shorten the course, the race committee shall display flag S with two sounds before the first boat crosses the finishing line. If the course is shortened, the finishing line shall be, (c) at a gate, between the gate marks.”
