Olympics can’t take a joke
Published on January 18th, 2026
The Olympic motto CITIUS, ALTIUS, FORTIUS – FASTER, HIGHER, STRONGER has inspired and motivated generations of Olympic athletes over the years. The event likes to stay on brand, and as Italian comedian and actor Massimo Boldi learned, they can’t take a joke.
“I’ve never moved a muscle in my life.” said Boldi about the honor. “I’m not an athlete. But the Olympic Committee called me and I said yes. And I didn’t get paid a single euro. They promised me just six hundred metres; if it were any longer, I don’t know how I’d manage. I’m not exactly young anymore. In truth, there are disciplines where I am a champion: f… and aperitifs.”
His humor was enough for the organizing committee to rescind the torchbearer offer. Ironically, the official motto for the 2026 Games is “IT’s Your Vibe”, which was to encourage people to find their own connection to the event… within reason.
