Great decisions born on bar stools

When the Finn dinghy was removed from the Olympic sailing program after Tokyo 2020, big people complained. No longer was there an option for the 200+/- pound crowd, but the Olympics lost too. Finn Class sailors are fun, which is what happens when you’re not strictly dieting.

Despite the panic from Olympic exclusion, the International Finn Association is doing just fine, and has lost none of its personality. That’s clear with the announcement of the inaugural WTF Grand Slam in 2026.

For most people, WTF is that acronym used to express extreme surprise, disbelief, confusion, or annoyance. In this instance, it allegedly is “World Tour for Finns” but we’d bet donuts to dollars it was a decision born on bar stools. Like I said, Finn sailors are fun.

I was introduced to the Snipe Class at the GFU 24 Hour Regatta. People were made to believe it stood for Go Fast Upwind or God Forgive Us but the truth was more like Get F*cked Up. And we did. Clearly, the Finn Class is up to no good too, and good on them. Only one person wins, so keep it fun for everyone else.
