Mexican chaos concern for Vallarta Race

Published on February 23rd, 2026

The 2026 San Diego to Puerto Vallarta race is scheduled to begin with staggered starts on February 26, 27, and 28. But with deadly violence in the Mexican region due to the military killing of an infamous cartel leader on February 22, there is concern it could trigger a “total war” in the country.

While the chaos appears to have calmed, host San Diego Yacht Club is deciding whether to proceed or cancel their 1000 nm race. As of February 23, the US Department of State has issued a warning to reconsider travel, while travel news publication Travel Off Path is advising not to travel as the situation is a massive unknown and highly volatile.

Puerto Vallarta is a popular tourist and cruise destination in the Mexican Riviera, with several cruise lines revising their itineraries to avoid the port. Twenty-four teams ranging from the 33 to 73 feet are on standby for the biennial race with a decision from SDYC anticipated by February 24.
