Eight Bells: Arthur Ellis

Arthur Dwight Ellis, 77, of Westerly, Rhode Island, passed away peacefully on June 2, 2026.

Born on April 29, 1949, in Springfield, Massachusetts, he lived a life guided by curiosity, creativity, and a deep desire to understand the world around him. A lifelong learner, he approached every interest with enthusiasm, thoughtful inquiry, and a commitment to excellence.

Some might remember him as a sailmaker with North Sails or at the forefront of sailing electronics with his Ockam Instruments. He was active in the Comets, Finns, FDs and a World Champion in Fireballs.

Over the years, Art pursued a wide range of interests, including model airplanes and teaching. Whatever captured his attention, he sought not only to master it, but to understand it deeply and to share that understanding with others. He had a gift for seeing connections, interpreting ideas in creative ways, and inspiring those around him to think more broadly and learn more deeply.

He is survived by his sons, Brian and David (Roseann); his granddaughters, Evangeline and Victoria; his longtime partner Louisa Bradford; his brothers Dwight and Charles; and his nephews Warren and Ryan.

He leaves behind a legacy of curiosity, insight, and encouragement. He will be remembered with affection and gratitude by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
