Reliving the Mighty Mary story

Published on September 3rd, 2026

If you’re a fan of Netflix’s sports documentary franchise, UNTOLD, which explores raw, behind-the-scenes stories and larger-than-life personalities from the athletic world and beyond, then the 98-minute Mighty Mary movie should get on your schedule.

After Bill Koch won the 1992 America’s Cup in his first bid, he launched an all-woman’s team – Mighty Mary – to compete for the 1995 edition in San Diego, CA. Thirty years later, this movie brings back to life the ground-breaking effort, and how close they came to shaking the status quo.

This is back when the defense had trials, and the film weaves footage from the 1995 Citizen Cup with current interviews from the participants. The story is well-told from those that were there, reliving the emotion of the moment alongside the characters recruited to seek selection.

The movie is scheduled for AMC Theaters on September 11-18 with opening cities to include New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, Miami, Boston, Washington DC, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, Detroit, Newport (RI), Annapolis, Oklahoma City and Traverse City (MI).
