Make participation easy and worthwhile

Whenever a fleet or organization gathers to discuss the future, my fear is conversation will be directed by the trophy winners. People successful in sport tend to be more involved, and their voices can carry further in a group. But what they want is often not what best serves the majority.

Recently, the IRC handicap organization in Great Britain held its annual meeting, and it was encouraging how many of the topics were not about what best serves the podium, but rather about growing engagement at club level and continued efforts to make yacht racing more accessible and welcoming.

A recurring theme throughout the meeting was participation. Reports from around the country demonstrated that clubs were seeing growth where they provide clear pathways into racing, active fleet management, and a strong social environment alongside competition.

Initiatives aimed at younger sailors, women, and newcomers were highlighted as particularly successful, with members sharing examples of fleets becoming increasingly self-sustaining as participation grows.

Looking further ahead, discussions covered emerging technology, including the use of AI and data analysis to better understand racecourse design and fleet performance. Members also reaffirmed the importance of maintaining the accessibility and simplicity that have long been central to IRC.
