America’s Cup: Notable Notes

Skunked: The original plan on July 5 was for the teams to compete in a fleet race, and then it was changed for each team to solo race the course to post the best time. But in the first cancellation of perhaps many, the time trials were canceled due to strong winds.

Restriction: The Coast Guard establishes a safety zone in San Francisco Bay on all race days, extending from Crissy Field to Pier 23 and is in effect from approximately 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Entry into or through the race area is strictly prohibited without receiving permission from the Patrol Commander via VHF-channel 23. Labor Unions: The teams aren’t the only ones idle during this America’s Cup. The carpenters’ union, which had lobbied San Francisco supervisors to allow the international event to be held on city property in the belief it would bring 9,000 jobs, reports that barely more than a handful of their workers are working on the event.
