Dragon wins solo leg of Bermuda 1-2

The Class40 Dragon sailed by Michael Hennessey won the first leg of the Bermuda One-Two from Newport, RI to St. Georges, Bermuda. The first leg is sailed by single handers to Bermuda and double handers back to Newport, RI.

Twenty three boats left Newport on June 4 in foggy conditions. Gryphon Solo, a Class40 sailed by Joe Harris, took the early lead but Dragon took over shortly and led for the rest of the race and finished first on June 8 at 15:23 EDT.

A Bermuda High settled over Bermuda causing very slow conditions coming into the finish. Dragon stayed East and was able to mostly head for the finish with SSE light winds having to tack just twice to make the finish. This is the second race in a row Dragon has received line honors. In 2019 he set himself up to the West of the rhumb line and was able to beat the fleet that was East of the rhumb line.

The return crew (single person) will join them for the return double handed leg starting on June 17.
