Americans move up at 29er Worlds

Valencia, Spain (August 29, 2021) – The 2021 Zhik 29er World Championship continued today for the 189 teams, with the first racing of the final series. The sailors saw good wind conditions, starting with a 6 knot east wind which reached 12-14 knots, with equal conditions across the course.

Racing today has brought surprises and many changes in the provisional standings, with silver and bronze finishes for the United States, Ian and Noah Nyenhuis and Anton Schmid/Peter Joslin, while locals Quicorras Urios and Filippo Benetti are in fifth.

The French team Keo Devaux and Enael Rio once again occupies first place in the provisional results, they already enjoyed that privilege at the end of the second qualifying round, but now they do so in the gold group in the final series, achieving a small boost and advantage in order to get the title.

The French began their journey with partial triumphs, heralding that it was going to be a great day for them, but they stayed at the gates. In the last race, with greater intensity of the wind, they did not manage to overcome the 16th place, and they remain with 25 points.

With 4 points difference, Ian and Noah Nyenhuis, one of the big favorites for the title, have placed. The Americans have done the same as the French, but in reverse. They have started badly, with a discreet 14th place, to move on to 4th and ending with a brilliant partial victory.

Their compatriots Anton Schmid and Peter Joslin still and despite maintaining a good regularity, with numbers of 4-7-8 some of that fight for the World Cup title are lowered as they add 35 points. In the previous phase they finished the 16th place.

From behind and already in a local key, the local crew and one of the great favorites finally stands out: Quicorra Urios and Filippo Benetti, signing two good sets with a 5th in the first of the day, and a 3rd in the last. In the second, a discreet 14th place has deprived them of being somewhat higher than that 5th place they occupy at the end of the day. The Spanish-Italian couple add 40 points, and although gold and silver are far away, the options for bronze are much closer, without ruling out other options.

Regarding the U17s, Hugo Revil and Karl Devaux (France) occupy the first place, followed by the Germans Carl Kruase and Max Georgi and the locals Mateo and Simón Codoñer. As for the women Martina Lodos and Martina Díaz-Salguero (RCN Gran Canaria) occupy the first place in this category.

Tomorrow, Monday August 30, the second day of the final series will be held, with the first start scheduled at 1:00 p.m.

Racing for the 189 teams is August 26-31. All competitors must be at least 13 years of age in 2021 with no maximum age, and prizes will recognize the top men’s and women’s teams along with the top teams under 17 years of age.
