2022 Force 5 Race Week

Published on February 26th, 2022

The 2022 Force 5 Race Week and Midwinter Championship attracted 35 sailors and their families on February 21-26 to Key Largo, FL. With temperatures in the upper 70s and winds out of the east at 11-16 knots, the annual gathering (and winter escape) was a worthy tribute for the 50 year design.

Racing included a destination race of six miles to an island in Florida Bay along with the annual DoubleHanded and Midwinter Championship races.

Philip Porte (St Clair, MI) claimed the traditional bottle of rum for his first place in the Nest Key Race. The DoubleHanded Championship was claimed by Dennis Hendel (Windsor, Ontario) and Jennifer Pullen (Amherstberg, Ontario). Second were Andrea Hill (Kingsville, Ontario) /Mark Allen (Waterford Township, MI) and third Greg Matthews (Key Largo, FL)/ Brian Price (Hendersonville, NC).

The overall Midwinter Championship was won by Jason Breeden (Bloomington, IN) with Fred Meno (Ft Worth, TX) in second and Mark Allen (Waterford Township, MI) in third.

In the “short rig” fleet, Bruce McCord (Key Largo, FL) finished at the top followed by Patrick Passafiume (Louisville, KY) and Andrea Hill (Kingsville, Ontario) in third.
