Sailing details for Paris 2024 Olympics

Published on May 18th, 2022

World Sailing has launched its dedicated Paris 2024 Olympic Sailing Competition website for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

This will be the central hub for latest news and official information for fans, sailors and officials in the run up to Paris 2024, including the Test Event scheduled for July 2023, as well as the go-to source for the Olympic Sailing Competition.

Sailing at Paris 2024 will take place in Marseille on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea between July 28 and August 8, and will feature Kiteboarding for the first time, following a successful Olympic debut in 2018 at the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires.

Ten Events for the Paris 2024 Sailing Program:
Men’s One Person Dinghy – ILCA 7
Women’s One Person Dinghy – ILCA 6
Men’s Skiff – 49er
Women’s Skiff – 49erFx
Men’s Kiteboard – Formula Kite Class
Women’s Kiteboard – Formula Kite Class
Men’s Windsurfing – iQFoil
Women’s Windsurfing – iQFoil
Mixed Two Person Dinghy – 470
Mixed Multihull – Nacra 17

With a quota on participation for each of the ten Events, the Paris 2024 qualification system for nations begins at the 2023 Sailing World Championships in The Hague, in which all the equipment classes will host their annual world titles.

The next opportunity for the Women’s and Men’s One Person Dinghy Events will be the 2024 ILCA 6 and 7 World Championships, after which all ten Events will have a qualifier on each of World Sailing’s six continents – Africa, Asia, Central/South America, Europe, North America/Caribbean, and Oceania.

The final opportunity for all ten Events is a last chance regatta to be held in 2024, just a few months before the Games begin.

Only one representative for qualified nations will compete in each of the ten Events, and the Paris 2024 Games is set to be the first to achieve a 50-50 split between male and female athletes, building on the progress made at both Rio 2016 (47.5%) and Tokyo 2020 (48.8%).

Once qualified, each nation determines its own system for selecting their representative. The Paris 2024 total athlete quota for Sailing is 330.

It will also be the first Olympic Games where two of the three Chief roles in the sailing event will be held by female officials, following the appointment of Pinar Coskuner Genç (TUR) as Principal Race Officer and Ana Sanchez Del Campo Ferrer (ESP) as Chair of International Jury.
