New format embraces alluring location

Just seven miles off the coast of Cape Cod, the island of Martha’s Vineyard feels worlds away, and the classic New England seaport village of Edgartown is one of Martha’s Vineyard’s most alluring locations.

Situated on the eastern side of the Island, Edgartown offers a delightful mix of old world charm and modern amenities, catering to local residents and seasonal visitors alike. Among the visitors on June 23-25 will be the competitors in Edgartown Yacht Club’s Edgartown Race Weekend.

A fleet of 71 boats has registered, with most of those coming to the island from across the Northeast for a revised format in 2022.

Twenty-two teams will participate June 23-24 in the 15 nautical-mile offshore “sprints” around various government buoys within Vineyard and Nantucket Sounds. This segment of the regatta replaces ‘Round-the-Buoys racing that had previously kicked off the regatta.

The goal of the new format is to provide more offshore and coastal-type racing for competitors in advance of Edgartown Race Weekend’s famous ’Round-the-Island Race.

A fleet of 66 boats will sail one of yacht racing’s oldest distance events, starting just outside Edgartown Harbor on June 25 for the 55 nautical-mile course that circumnavigates Martha’s Vineyard in a clockwise manner.

While spectators view the action from the island’s coastal vantage points, competitors will enjoy magnificent views of cliffs, headlands, lighthouses, towns and open water as they play the tidal currents and manage wind effects.

Teams of all sizes and calibers are signed up with racing held for ORC, PHRF-NE (including Spinnaker, Non-Spinnaker, and Doublehanded Divisions), and Multi-Hulls.
