America’s Cup: Is this real or more fluff?

When the five entered teams in the 38th America’s Cup agreed to extend the entry deadline by two months, it was an easy decision. Additional teams translates to additional revenue, and the 2027 edition is all about maximizing its commercial potential.

There must have been credible interest to warrant the extension, but why enter? The Fab Five all previously competed, were well underway with their development plans, and new teams don’t fare well, particularly when they start late. There was no downside to approving the extension.

Then there’s the matter of having an AC75 to race, as only boats from the 2024 America’s Cup are permitted. New teams are allowed to build a 2024 era design – but now lack the time – or secure an available hull. There is only one from American Magic which allegedly isn’t for sale.

And if they clear that hurdle, an America’s Cup campaign requires serious money from seriously successful people. The kind of people that are accustomed to winning. Why get involved with such long odds? Or, is this all a PR scheme to keep us interested? The event website certainly overflows with fluff. Standing by for March 31.

Defender New Zealand and Challenger of Record from Great Britain confirmed the Protocol for the 38th America’s Cup on August 12, 2025. The close of the initial entry period was October 31, 2025, with late entries considered up to March 31, 2026. If no USA team participates in the 38th America’s Cup, it will be the first time in the event’s 175-year history.

• Athena Racing (GBR) – Challenger of Record
• Luna Rossa (ITA) – Challenger
• Tudor Team Alinghi (SUI) – Challenger
• K-Challenge (FRA) – Challenger

After the 2024 event, Barcelona, Spain declined hosting another edition, with the venue moved to Naples, Italy. Challenger racing begins in the spring before the 38th Match on July 10-18, 2027.
