College Sailing Chalk Talk – Season 9, Episode 7

Published on November 14th, 2013

Chris Love provides this report on the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) 2013-2014 season along with his weekly Chalk Talk video:

This week in college sailing, the big news is the ICSA / LaserPerformance Singlehanded National Championship sailed last weekend in Newport, RI. Boston College sophomore Erika Reineke took her second straight women’s title, winning exactly half of the 18 races sailed. On the Men’s side, Greg Martinez, a sophomore from Georgetown, got the win in a stacked fleet. Enrique Arathoon from College of Charleston was arguably the fastest on the course, with eight wins in 18 races, but two DSQ’s on Saturday allowed him only a third place finish overall.

The Kennedy Cup, the Big Boat National Championship sailed at the Naval Academy, made history this year with the top three teams tied at the end of the three days of racing. University of Michigan, Navy, and California Maritime had their place determined by a head-to-head tiebreaker, per ICSA procedural rules, awarding 2013 National Championship to Cal Maritime, who will now represent the US at the 2014 Student Yachting World Cup in France.

This upcoming weekend, College of Charleston will host the coed Atlantic Coast Championship, while Cornell hosts the Women’s ACC’s. These three-conference regattas bring together some of the best talent in ICSA to sail for their fall dinghy championships. This will be also be the last weekend of interconference dinghy sailing for the season, with only the Match Race National Championship left to go.
