Top teams in College Team Racing

Spring nationals is the annual highlight and conclusion of the College sailing season, with a new format pairing the Open and Women’s Team Race Championship to be held a few weeks before the corresponding fleet race dinghy nationals. Giving an early preview of the hot teams for team racing is SailRank:

What a weekend for college sailing! While the remaining conferences finished their respective team race qualifiers, the event of the week was undoubtedly the Thompson Trophy at Connecticut College and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy! With 16 almost entirely nationals bound teams representing four conferences split between the two sites, we at SailRank were able to gather crucial data to help shape our upcoming nationals predictions.

The biggest winner of the week was Stanford who between a team at the PCCSC championship and the Thompson, added 38 wins and just one loss to their record, sending them soaring to the top of the Open Rankings just 29 points ahead of Yale! Harvard moves down to third on the rankings following a second-place finish to Stanford on the Connecticut College side of the Thompson.

On the topic of Yale, their women’s team continues to sit comfortably on top of our Women’s Team Race Rankings after winning the NEISA conference championship at the inaugural Legler with a record of 14 wins to 3 losses! Stanford follows them on that list and is definitely another top contender for the overall winner at this year’s women’s championship. Third on the women’s list this week is Boston College who came second to Yale at the Legler with 11 wins and 6 losses.

On both fronts, this spring’s team race nationals should be one to watch closely as the top four teams can all definitely win on a good day. Keep an eye out as we prepare our official predictions before the events start on April 25th.
