Pristine Conditions Highlight Sperry Top-Sider NOOD Regatta San Diego

Published on March 14th, 2014

San Diego, CA (March 14, 2014) – Sunshine, blue skies and a moderate breeze paved the way for a great racing at day one of the Sperry Top-Sider NOOD Regatta San Diego, the second-stop on the country’s largest regatta series.

While local sailing knowledge was critical on the regatta’s South Bay course today, one of the day’s top performances came from Minneapolis, MN. Skipper Joel Ronning in the J/70 class. A regular on the NOOD series, Ronning and crew aboard Catapult, made the most of the 10-plus knot west winds to claim a two-point lead after three races. Trailing Catapult by the slim margin is San Diego-based Co-Skippers Eric Kownacki and Tom Jenkins aboard DFZ, who will try to leverage their veteran knowledge of San Diego Bay to overtake the fleet’s lead on their home course tomorrow.

“San Diego Bay is a premiere venue for competitive racing and we saw a handful of skippers excel on the South Bay course today,” said George Brengle, Sailing World’s director of marketing. “The forecast looks perfect for the weekend, so I anticipate more great sailing is on the way.”

Another San Diegan, Skipper Terrence Gleeson, in the regatta’s I/14 class, sailed flawlessly on the Bay. Aboard Morningstar, Gleeson and crew registered a perfect day of sailing, claiming first place in all three of their races.

To recognize exceptional individual performances in each boat class, NOOD Premiere Sponsor, North Sails will present daily awards for the top three daily crews in each class. Additionally, on each Saturday of the season, North Sails will present the best performing local boat with an award for that day’s best racing.
