VIDEO: Spring Feva in Southern California

While not indigenous to Southern California, a trailer full of new RS Feva dinghies were used recently for youth clinics. It was Coronado Yacht Club Coach Jon Rogers first experience coaching Feva’s, and he was pleasantly surprised at how much little kids could do on the boat.
Several of the participants had never flown a spinnaker before and quickly picked up hoisting, gybing and dousing the kites. Many of the kids enjoyed capsizing the most and had no problem getting it righted. The best part for Rogers was watching the ‘light bulb’ go on when the more experienced kids were able to learn how to high speed reach and control the boat despite the huge increase in apparent wind.
“Reaching skill and the ‘high and fast’ mode used in breezy conditions by many asymmetrical spinnaker boats is fun and that is often missing in the regular windward/leeward format now favored,” notes Rogers.
