AMERICA’S CUP: Still good for San Francisco

If it was not awash in controversy, it would not be the America’s Cup. The 34th edition may be noted more for the conflict within the host city than within the competing teams. In this report by C.W. Nevius of the San Francisco Chronicle, he comments on a recent hearing called by Supervisor John Avalos for the Budget and Finance Committee to hold the organizers’ feet to the fire over the event’s financial inconsistencies.

Despite all the change that has occurred since the event was initially presented, Nevius’ report closes with this observation:

It all boils down to a single question: Would you rather have this event here or not? I’d say the overwhelming answer is yes. In fact, Supervisor Mark Farrell put it very nicely at the end of the Budget and Finance Committee hearing last week.

“The bottom line is this is going to be a great event at zero cost to the city. We’re talking about (an estimated) $900 million in economic activity and (a potential) 6,500 jobs. A lot of cities would pay a lot for that. World-class cities put on world-class events. And I think our city is going to shine.”
