Eight Bells: Harry Voss

After beating cancer for over a decade, Harry F. Voss, died March 6 in Key Largo, Florida. He was 78.

Harry was a long time resident of Rochester, NY. After growing up in Catskill, NY, Harry earned a BBA in Industrial Management from Clarkson College of Technology. After college he joined the Marine Corps and as a rifle company commander achieved the rank of Captain. In 1965, Harry moved to Rochester and began his career at Diamond Packaging, buying controlling interest in 1973.

Harry was not only a CEO of a very successful company but also as an avid sailor. An active member of the Rochester Yacht Club for over 40 years, he competitively sailed all over the world, winning the 1985 8-Metre World Championship on Lake Ontario.

Five days before the start of the championship, Harry discovered that his yacht, Golden Feather, which he had purchased to race in the event, failed to measure in. After many frantic hours, at least one sleepless night, and with significant help from designer Pelle Petterson, Golden Feather was launched just minutes before the deadline. With an approved measurement certificate but was still untested prior to the start of the first race, Harry went on to beat Petterson for the title.

Harry’s positive energy and zest for life was infectious. He welcomed people with a big hug and a warm smile. He lived life to the fullest always lighting up a room with his charm and sense of humor.
