Argyle Campbell wins San Diego NOOD

San Diego, CA (March 19, 2017) – The Helly Hansen Hansen National Offshore One Design (NOOD) Regatta in San Diego attracted 126 boats for 13 classes of competition on March 17 through 19. This was the second stop of the 5-event NOOD national tour, with the top teams from each event advancing to the Caribbean NOOD Championship Regatta in the British Virgin Islands on October 22-29.

The overall winner in San Diego was Argyle Campbell (Newport Beach, CA) who dominated the 20-boat Etchells fleet. The Etchells class was the largest of the regatta and considered the most competitive of the three-day event. Campbell is enjoying a return to the Etchells class, a classic raceboat he finds both challenging and rewarding.

The Helly Hansen NOOD Regatta in San Diego was the first time Campbell and his crew —Jeremy Wilmot, Eric Anderson and Victor Diaz de Leon — sailed together. Their goal was to get to know each other as a crew this weekend, so team “Rock n’ Roll” took a conservative approach, working with their coach Vince Brun on Thursday and Friday to prepare for the regatta.

“Eighty percent of the stuff he told us, we would have never figured out,” Campbell said. “It was a lot of details, but we wanted to keep it simple.”

According to Campbell, the traditional rule when sailing in the waters off Point Loma is to always go right, though fog and light air can complicate things. This was very much the case on the racecourse Sunday. The team was cognizant of the day’s light winds and tried to “play the puffs” near shore while remaining careful not to get caught too far offshore.

The 2017 edition was the first San Diego NOOD Regatta featuring the Formula 18 catamaran class. The top skipper in this fleet was Scott Miller, of Ramona, Calif., on “Casi Listo,” who won five of seven races.

Miller said the turnout and competition in San Diego was strong, likely inspired by the class’s upcoming national championship. With a successful Helly Hansen NOOD Regatta this year, he’s hopeful the fleet will be back next year in even greater numbers.

“It was a beautiful weekend, and we love the flat water for catamarans down in the South Bay,” Miller said. “The wind was in our favor, even though it was difficult and shifty at times.”
