Proctor leads Lightning Midwinter Championship

Published on March 23rd, 2017

Miami, FL (March 23, 2017) – The final stop of the 2-event Lightning Southern Circuit got underway at the Midwinter Championship with two races completed for the 29-boat fleet.

The forecast was calling for a strong front to come through mid day and then bring big breeze to the area. The fleet got in one race in the morning in a light and shifty North Easterly. Neal Fowler from Massachusetts sailing with Kip Hamblet and Tracey Taylor lead wire to wire and took the first bullet. Cristobal Perez from Chile sailing with Alfred Sherman and Rodrigo Ducasse finished in second followed by Ched Proctor from Connecticut sailing with Jay Lurie and Ben Cesare.

The breeze continued to shift and build as the front got closer. With that brought some thunderstorms to the area which resulted in the fleet being sent ashore. After a short postponement the fleet was sent out in a nice 15-17 knot breeze. Team Proctor worked the left side of the course and won the race. Team Perez finished right behind them followed by local Bill Mauk sailing with Brown University Sailors Mitch Howell and Nathan Housberg.

Team Proctor and Team Perez are tied for 1st with 4 points while Team Fowler and the Peck Family from Connecticut (David Peck, wife Nina and son Dave) are tied for 3rd with 9 points.

Racing continues through March 25.
