Published on August 4th, 2017

The Canada Games is a high-level multi-sport event held every two years in Canada, alternating between the Canada Winter Games and the Canada Summer Games. Athletes are strictly amateur only, and represent their province or territory.

The Games, first held in 1967 in Quebec City, has included Sailing since the 1969 event in Halifax-Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. For the 2017 Games, six sailing events were held July 30 to August 4 on Lake Winnipeg in Gimli, Manitoba.

After 8 races in the Laser fleet, Ontario’s Matti Muru takes home the Gold medal, after leading throughout the event. Close behind, John Owen from British Columbia takes Silver and Quebec’s Justin Vittecoq takes home the Bronze. Racing was tight in the Laser fleet throughout the event and finishes with only three points separating the top three sailors.

Radial sailor Clara Gravely from Ontario lead the entire event, with six 1st place finishes over 8 races and finishing with a comfortable point lead and a Gold Medal. Lauren Sullivan from Nova Scotia takes home Silver after a week of strong racing. The Bronze Medal goes to Léa Desgroseilliers from Quebec.

In the 2.4mR class, Joe Gerlinsky from Saskatchewan takes home the Gold Medal, an improvement on his Silver Medal at the 2013 Canada Games. Ontario’s Aaron Wong-Sing takes Silver, also improving on his 2013 Canada Games Bronze. Siobhan MacDonald, another Canada Games veteran, from Nova Scotia captures the Bronze. MacDonald missed out on the medals in 2013, finishing 4th.

The 29er Male fleet sailed 11 races over the event. Cameron Shaw & Justin Timmins from Nova Scotia won the Gold Medal, with all top 4 finishes. Silver goes to Galen Richardson & Jake Adair from Ontario, who were followed closely by Cameron Baird & Alec Baird from Quebec who take home the Bronze.

In the 29er Female fleet, racing was close through 9 races, with Audrey Staples & Caterina Kunz from Quebec securing the Gold Medal. Georgia Stein & Chloe Congourdeau of Ontario are close behind, winning the Silver, followed by Emily Bugeja & Hannah Smith from BC who take Bronze.
