Strong Field for Annual Corinthian Battle

Published on September 21st, 2017

The 56th Cal 20 Class Championships will be held September 22-24 in San Pedro, CA. Even though the Cal 20 has been out of production for approximately 40 years, the class still has a strong Southern California following. The 2017 edition currently has 28 boats entered in three different fleets including Gold, Silver, and Bronze. This tiered racing approach allows like sailors to compete with their peers. The Cal 20 is proud to remain a purely Corinthian class per class rules.

Racing will take place inside Los Angeles Harbor under flat water conditions. Most entries are from host Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club, Alamitos Bay Yacht Club, and Shoreline Yacht Club of Long Beach. Shoreline Yacht Club boasts five foundation boats that are eligible to race in the Bronze fleet. Gold and Silver fleet entries are required to be skippered by their respective owners.

Key sailors to watch include last year’s Cal 20 Class Champions Keith Ives with crew Chuck Stevens along with 2009 Class Champion Chuck Clay. Local CBYC hot shot Kenny Dair along with class veteran Stu Robertson are also sailors who can make their presence known. The Cal 20 Class Championships will include seven races with no throw outs which puts a high emphasis on consistency.
