Tokyo 2020: Venues secure for 2021

Tokyo 2020 has confirmed it has secured all 42 venues required to host the postponed Olympic and Paralympic Games next year. The final two pieces of the puzzle were the Athletes’ Village and the Tokyo Big Sight – the venue for the International Broadcasting Center and Main Press Center.

Organizers said all venues which had been due to host events had the Games gone ahead as planned in 2020 had been confirmed for the rearranged event. This was a significant achievement after the coronavirus pandemic moved the competition to July 23 to August 8, 2021.

Sailing events will be held 60 km from Tokyo at Enoshima Yacht Harbour in Fujisawa City. This venue is Japan’s first ever harbor capable of hosting water sport competitions, and was constructed for use at the 1964 Olympic Games.

However, concerns continue to be raised in how it will be difficult for the Games to be held without a vaccine for COVID-19, while Tokyo has seen a spike in coronavirus cases in recent weeks.

Under a roadmap published by Tokyo 2020 last month, the implementation of COVID-19-related measures is expected to be tested in early 2021. Limiting the number of spectators at venues is among the countermeasures which could be considered. Full report.
