Snow, Muller win at Oakcliff Triple Crown

Published on October 3rd, 2021

The second half of the 2021 Oakcliff Triple Crown Series was held for eight 49er teams on October 2-3 in Oyster Bay, NY. With over $35,000 in prize grants on the table, Nevin Snow (San Diego, CA) and Nic Muller (Ft. Pierce, FL) won seven of the eight races to take first.

Teams saw light conditions both days, with 5-10 knots on day one and 5-6 knots on day two. Completing the podium was Chris and Duncan Williford (Fort Lauderdale, FL) in second and Charlie Hibben (Cape Cod, MA) and Scott Rasmussen (Fort Myers, FL) in third.

“We did a good job staying in touch with the other top boats,” said Snow. “Rather than taking risks, we sailed conservatively. We also had great downwind speed to put us ahead.”

The Triple Crown is not only to help teams get established with funding, but to raise the overall level of Olympic sailing in the United States.

Athletes rely on grants won at the Oakcliff Triple Crown as a way to fund their campaigns between training blocks. This was Snow and Muller’s first regatta as team training for the Olympics, so they plan to use their grant money to hone their skills together training in Florida.

“Lots of teams here, including us, are newer to the 49er, so the grant will go towards making this winter’s training block the most successful it can be,” said Snow. “It will help us buy the new 49er class masts and sails so we can compete at the top of our game.”
