DOCTOR ADVICE: Good news from the overall winner

Published on March 18th, 2013

Aside from the usual sailing rock stars, the Sperry Top-Sider NOOD Regatta in San Diego last weekend attracted a couple other notable celebrities in the field. National talk radio host and author Doctor Laura Schlessinger posted a credible fourth place in her first outing in her new J/70, while Emmy-nominated co-host of the award-winning talk show The Doctors, Jim Sears, dominated the Viper 640 class and was selected as the NOOD Regatta’s overall winner.

Dr. Sears, a board-certified pediatrician, answers the question from Sailing World’s Dave Reed as to whether sailing is good for our health:

“Yes, it is one of those sports you can do your whole life. My kids are playing basketball and soccer, and I tell them how they’re not going to be doing that when they are older. They’ll be sailing or playing golf or something else. Sailing is one of those sports that keeps you limber and provides a great mental challenge, all of which helps to keep you young. So as long as we don’t do too much of the beer drinking afterwards, sailing is a good sport.”
