Sailing the big winner in sports funding package

Australia’s elite athletes are to receive a funding boost, but sports will be held more accountable for the money they spend on high-performance programs. The Australian Sports Commission announced its new funding allocations on Monday, which will be worth a total of $120 million in 2013-14. The new funding package prioritises sports which have made a strong case that they can deliver improved performance. Among the sports to receive increases is sailing ($900,000 extra), while Australia’s two biggest Olympic sports – swimming and athletics – have seen their funding cut. – Full report
