Published on June 20th, 2013

Fort Lauderdale, FL (June 20, 2013) – The Lauderdale Yacht Club Sailing Foundation has named Maximo Nores (Miami Beach, Florida) the inaugural winner of their William I. Koch Development Team Award. Nores, who trains out the Miami Yacht Club, qualified for the U.S. Sailing Development Team (RS:X Class) by winning the U.S. Sailing Youth World Qualifier in Clearwater, FL in January. The victory also qualifies Nores for the ISAF Youth Worlds to be held in Cyprus this summer. As part of the award Nores will receive $1,000 from the Foundation to support his training program.

The award is named for America’s Cup winner and philanthropist William I. Koch. Koch is a significant supporter of youth sailing in South Florida and nationally. In addition to supporting the Lauderdale Yacht Club Sailing Foundation Koch is also an avid supporter of the Sea Scout Program of the Boy Scouts of America, biannually hosting the William I. Koch International Sea Scout Cup.

The Lauderdale Yacht Club Sailing Foundation was established in 2010 and has two primary programs. In addition to providing grants to South Florida youth sailors for international competition it has established a scholarship program to introduce elementary school children to sailing.
