Roshambo: Speed beats Smarts
Published on August 7th, 2013
Before Artemis Racing had launched their AC72, helm Nathan Outteridge knew what it would take to win…
“To succeed in the 34th America’s Cup, a team will certainly require a fast boat, but more importantly being able to do all the maneuvers properly. It will be imperative to understand what a boat can do, being able to do not necessarily foiling gybes, but being able to exit the turn at a minimum of 25 knots of boat speed. Once you get your team and boat at that type of level, then it will be about racing smart – gybing on the puffs, taking on the shifts, managing the boundaries. As teams improve, it will ultimately look like 45 racing.”
After watching Artemis Racing compete now in two races, it’s appearing that no amount of smarts will help Nathan and his team overcome their speed issues around the course.
