America’s Cup defense is better offshore

Team New Zealand boss Grant Dalton says his crew are like “vikings” more suited to raiding for the America’s Cup offshore. Naples has been confirmed as the next destination for Team NZ’s defence of the Auld Mug in 2027.
Once Team NZ’s plan to bring the Cup back to Auckland didn’t materialize, the Italian port city emerged as a hosting contender with Athens and a Middle East bid, winning hosting rights.
Team NZ’s chief executive said it was the perfect venue and dismissed concerns about taking their defense to the home of one of their great rivals, Italian outfit Luna Rossa.
“We’re raiders, we’re like vikings. When we’re offshore, we have no distractions and get to work,” Dalton said. – Full report

No entries have yet been submitted for the 38th America’s Cup as Defender New Zealand works with the Challenger of Record from Great Britain to organize the event. The two teams have agreed on some details with the venue moved to Naples, Italy after Barcelona, Spain declined hosting another edition. Racing will be in the spring and summer of 2027.
