2013 Lightning North American Championships Underway

(August 19, 2013) – Long Island Sound surprised everyone today! A nice Southwest breeze of about 8-12 knots allowed the Race Committee to run 3 great races on the first day of the Lightning North American Championship. 58 teams traveled from as far as Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Colorado, Florida and Texas to compete in the 2013 Lightning North American Championships that began today at the Cedar Point Yacht Club in Westport, CT.

Chilean Tito Gonzalez sailing with his daughter Trinidad and longtime crew Cristian Herman are leading the fleet after posting a 2, 2, 1. David Dellenbaugh, Jay Lurie and Janel Zarkowsky are in second with two firsts and a fourth. Todd Wake sailing with his son Doug and Jay Mueller are tied for third with Ched Proctor, Jamie Ewing and Merdith Killion.

The qualifying series continues tomorrow with one more race. The fleet will then be split into the Championship and President’s Cup Divisions. Racing will conclude on Friday.

This championship concludes two weeks of North American Championships. Last week 57 boats competed in the Junior and Master North American Championships and Classic Rally that were held at the Nyack Boat Club in Nyack, NY. Ched Proctor, Charlie Proctor and Debbie Dudas won the Master’s Division. Canadian Adam MacDonald, Allie Jones and Abby Bennett took the Junior Title. Lightning # 2 and team of John Boynton, Jamie Boynton and Bob Shapiro won the Classic Division. Mike Siebert won the Best Restoration award for restoring Lightning #6343.
