France wins Student Yachting World Cup 2013

Published on October 19th, 2013

Pornic, France (October 19, 2013) – This morning, we could see tired faces among every crew. Today was the last day of the 33rd edition of the Student Yachting World Cup. France was already known, yesterday, as the new champion. Switzerland, second, was 6 points ahead of Team USA. The EPFL team must secure their place. Today, because of the tide, only one race could happen. The committee chose a windward leeward race. This race runs for the “Pornic Trophy.”

This morning, the teams had to come earlier to start the races before the tide doesn’t allow them to get back at the harbor. The wind was very low, with only 7 knots coming from South East. All the teams did a fair start. This race was without spinnakers. England led the first lap, then France lacked second at the mark. The boats were not sailing so fast. On the second lap, all the boats were following the others in an Indian line. After the dog legs during the second lap, Switzerland overtook its competitors and took the first place. England was then second. Eventually, Switzerland won the race which confirmed their place at the general ranking; England finished second, and then came the Defender. England with 75 points overtook Australia 76 points in the general ranking. They are now respectively 4th and 5th. France finished this race sixth.

Back to the harbor, France from Kedge Business School celebrated their victory on the pontoon after 18 outstanding races on the water. The AGPM trophy for the general winner of the coastal races also belongs to France. The trophy of the City of Pornic belongs to Switzerland, winner of the race of the day and also second at the general ranking. The USA, represented by the US Naval Academy, finished third to complete the podium.
